Consumption levels of 3-MCPDe in food are considered safe for most consumers, but they pose a potential health concern to high consumers in younger age groups. Therefore, the European Commission has placed new, stricter maximum limits of 3-MCPD esters for vegetable and fish oils incorporated in foodstuffs for Young Children (age 1-3 years). The new EU legislation on 3-MCPDe levels is expected to come into effect January 2021.
These new tightened food safety regulations will impact food manufacturers operating in the bakery, confectionery, and infant food and formula sectors. The legislation is not only relevant to manufacturers of food specifically for young children, but also for producers that make products which are consumed by the whole family.
